Assignments for my Tricksters, Heroes, and Monsters and Design for Animators class
The first images shown here are for my Tricksters class, in which I made this illustration to represent the folklore surrounding Selkies, in which an Irish or Scottish woman can transform into a seal using her seal skin. These women were usually forced into marriage by human sailors, who would steal their coats and hide them away for them to stay human. This illustration shows a selkie woman finding her coat and running towards the ocean, leaving her human child behind. I initially used Photoshop, but for ease of comfort at home, I switched to my iPad on Procreate. This is shown through the time-lapse video, where my initial sketch is imported, and I work from that point forward.
The second illustration is for my Design for Animators class, in which we were tasked with making a dream fantasy palace. I always enjoy Irish folklore due to my family heritage, so I decided to take inspiration from Kylemore Abbey in County Galway, Ireland. The first part of the process was using a two-point perspective in my sketchbook with graphite and a ruler, then going over it with watercolor and pen. After transporting the image to Photoshop, I input grids and lowered the opacity of the sketchbook to use as a reference. The creatures in the water consist of a mermaid, selkie, and kelpie.
